Two posts hit me this morning. In one, there was a LI post that asked about what will be the next ChatGPT moment in AI. In another, Audrey Watters posted in her newsletter about AI not necessarily making our lives better, and how we all should be doubling down on strengthening our human capacities for humanity. My thinking is that one of the next AI moments is going to be when a monumental disaster strikes that will be directly or indirectly caused by AI. Perhaps it will be a data breach. As we feed unprecedented amounts of personal information into AI, including government information, there are huge incentives to crack open those databases. Perhaps it will be a decision. We know AI makes mistakes, and the expression we used to use was, "to err is human, but to really f*ck things up you need a computer." AI maginifies that as corporations, governments, and government agencies are relying AI to make decisions that affect the lives of millions. Perhaps it will be unscrupulous use of AI to enrich a very few at the expense of all of us; using AI to deny benefits or services, to invoice, fine, tax, threaten, or perhaps to hide transfers of funds into the accounts of those running the AI. Or maybe a perfect storm of all three. But it's bound to happen. And the most likely outcome is that there will be a few scapegoats who get punished and our our tech titans and governing class be able to conduct "business as usual" because they got rid of the few bad apples that caused a crisis that no one could have foreseen or prepared for. For the rest of us, let's double down on strengthening our human capacities for humanity and building our islands of coherence. |
Mindshifting is recognizing and shifting from the mindsets that hold us back to the mindsets that push us forward. I write about mindsets, Mindshifting, learning, and education, with the hope that these posts give readers more power over their own lives and helps them give others, like their students, more power as well.
On March 18, 2025 we finished up the MindShifting: Conflict and Collaboration course with 12 presentations on lessons that participants created. These are so inspiring, there were lessons for young children through high school, lessons for adults, posters, a song, and an AI generated podcast about a technique to de-escalate a confrontation with a student. You won't want to miss these. The next MindShifting class starts April 22 (NY teachers can find the course on Frontline, WA teachers can...
Fong Chua hosts the Peak Potential Success show, and I recently had the chance to talk with him about succeeding despite adversity, developing a mindset that fuels success, and #MindShifting. I hope you find this as helpful and interesting as I did. You might want to consider subscribing to the podcast for more interesting discussions.
Carl Jung, frenemy of Sigmund Freud, and a pillar of Psychoanalysis. He died in 1977, and in his later years talked about the interfaces between humans and technology. He felt that our relationship with technology would be the greatest danger we faced in the future. Here is a quote from one of his later interviews: “The power of science and technics … is so enormous and indisputable that there is little point in reckoning up all that can be done and all that has been invented. One shudders at...
